Talenfeld Breaks NSU’s All-Time Walk Record In Game Two

Sharks Fall 2-0 and 9-3 To Florida Tech

BOX 1 GAME SCORE | GAME 2 GAME SCORE

MELBOURNE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern University softball team (22-14, 4-8 SSC) were unable to play two complete games due to inclement weather but played enough innings as the Sharks dropped both to the Florida Tech Panthers (18-15, 3-6 SSC), 2-0 and 9-3, Wednesday at the Nancy Bottge Field.

Senior Rachel Talenfeld (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) earned a walk in game two to surpass NSU’s Hall of Famer, Kim Eason who previous held the record with 94 career walks. Talenfeld stood in the box and watch four straight pitches as she trotted to first for her 95th career walk.

GAME ONE
The first game between the two teams turned into a pitching battle between senior Lexi Sarradet (Miami, Fla.) and FIT’s Brianna Barth.

Both teams combined for six hits, as NSU and Florida Tech both completed the game with three a piece.

Gianni Artidiello (Fr., Miami, Fla.), Laura Saladrigas (So., Hollywood, Fla.) and Sara DeMuth (Jr., Plant City, Fla.) all recorded hits but the Sharks could not string together any rallies to score a run.

The Panthers were the first to record a hit as Natalie Beach doubled in the bottom of the first but Sarradet completed the inning with no damage done.

Dani Millan (Fr., Ventura, Calif.) was the Sharks first base runner as she grounded a ball the first baseman who could not handle the hard hit, allowing Millan to reach first with two outs. Just like FIT, NSU did not capitalize with a runner on base.

In the third, Artidiello recorded the Sharks first base hit as she laid down a bunt single right on the third base line with one out. Two straight outs by the Panther defense closed out the inning with the game still at 0-0.

It wasn’t until the fourth when the Panthers put a run on the board. Beach singled to start the inning and put herself in scoring position with a stolen base. Brianna Barth laid down the sacrifice bunt, putting Beach 60-feet from home plate. Designated player Lauren Cole sent a shallow ball to right but an off throw platted Beach as the Panthers led 1-0.

Florida Tech scored another run off a Sharks error as they now held a 2-0 lead after the fifth.

In the sixth, Saladrigas doubled to left with two outs for only the Sharks second hit. Freshman Gina Bondarenko (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) walked on four straight pitches to put the tying run on base. A fielder’s choice ended the Sharks rally.

In the seventh, DeMuth roped a single to left field but that was all NSU could string together as they dropped its second straight game.

Sarradet (7-3) threw a complete game, surrendering three hits, one earned run while walking two and striking out three.

GAME TWO
The Sharks were halted in the sixth inning due to the bad weather that was approaching after already having a 30 minute delay in the fourth inning due to rain.

The Sharks found themselves in a hole after the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the first, but NSU climbed right back in the top of the second to take the lead for the first time since the first inning of the first game of the series on Tuesday.

Bondarenko started the rally by ripping a double to left center to start the second inning. Millan earned a walk and Holly Roberson (Fr., Dunnellon, Fla.) reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Stephanie Palazzolo (So., New Port Richey, Fla.) returned to the lineup after being out due to injury and singled behind second base to bring home Bondarenko.

Artidiello grounded a ball up the middle allowing another run to score as the game was even 2-2. Junior Katie Kelton (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Talenfeld earned back-to-back walks, as the Sharks took the 3-2 lead.

The Panthers responded by scoring two runs in the third after the Sharks’ defense committed two errors before the game was halted due to rain.

The game resumed 30 minutes later, but NSU never recovered as Florida Tech scored five additional runs before the second line of rain hit the field, as the Sharks lost 9-3.

Devin Higginbotham (Sr., Palatka, Fla.) earned the loss as she hurled 4.1 innings, giving up eight hits before Sarradet came in for relief.

The Sharks continue Sunshine State Conference play as they head to Miami Shores, Fla. for the three-game series against the Barry University Buccaneers on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2.
